During the summer of 2018, I was mowing the lawn and thinking - mowing the lawn gives me a lot of time to think about things. As I was mowing along, I reflected on an idea my dad had talked about in the past regarding planting trees and having a Christmas tree farm. As a kid I thought that sounded like the coolest idea, and that someday I would like to plant a Christmas tree farm. Mowing grass on this sunny day, I thought, “I’d still love to do that!” Then I considered the fact that even if I planted trees that year, I’d have to wait 7-10 years for the trees to grow big enough to harvest. I didn’t want to wait that long! Now that my brain was clicking along, I realized I'd seen organizations that had fresh cut tree lots - why couldn’t I do that? As soon as I finished mowing, I pitched the idea to my husband Gator and he said, “Let’s do it!”
I had no idea where to even begin, so I started Googling (I love Google). I found a great article outlining the start-up of a fresh cut Christmas tree lot. After more in-depth searching, I found an amazing wholesale Christmas tree farm just a few hours north of Pearl City.
With a plan now in hand (and a source for trees), the next task at hand was finding a sales location. Gator and I run an automotive repair shop in Pearl City, and our shop is located right on Main Street. The property is a great location and used to be a feed mill. While the feed mill itself was torn down quite a long time ago, there was a building at the South end of the parking lot that was an old grain storage barn. In my opinion, it would serve as the perfect Christmas tree barn! The building was pretty old and crusty, but I thought Gator and I could breathe new life into it and resurrect it for our Christmas tree lot.
That first year was crazy! We really didn’t know what we were doing, and there was so much work that had to be done to prepare for the season. I also forgot to mention that we didn’t decide to pursue this plan until early September. On top of having three small kids and our regular business to run, we only had about 10 weeks until we'd need to open. By working late nights and weekends, we somehow got it all done! It was a lot of work, but we had amazing help and could tell many stories of kindness as we hustled our way toward that first opening day. We could not have done it without all the help from family and friends. It was an amazing blessing to have a community of people rally around Gator's and my dream. Our little Pearl City Christmas Wonderland was finished, and it had exceeded both of our expectations.
That’s our story! Once a year we get the amazing opportunity to bring Christmas alive with beautiful trees and Christmas Spirit in our wonderful little town of Pearl City.
Kind of like a Hallmark movie...
